Eating Habits & Disorders

What causes eating disorders?

A lot of people blame the media and our increasing obsession with ultra-skinny models and celebrities. Experts reckon that although these things play a part in shaping the way we see ourselves and our bodies, the real causes are much more complicated and more likely to be about our own, deep-rooted feelings of self-worth.

People who overcome these illnesses often describe eating as the only thing they could control in a time when they felt unable to cope with other events or emotions.

What triggers these illnesses is deeply personal, but sufferers frequently give these reasons:

  • Setting high standards for yourself, or feeling pressured by others
  • Feeling anxious about the natural weight gain during puberty, or fearing adulthood and the responsibilities it brings
  • Suffering low self-esteem, possibly due to bullying
  • Stress caused by problems with your family, friends, partner, job or study
  • Traumatic events like death or divorce
